“Wow, she must have really run last night,” Fletch remarked to Craig.
“She hooked up with the wolves that came to drink at the pond.”
Fletch gave him a concerned look.
“Don’t worry, I kept an eye on her. She had a great time. The others appeared to be about the same age. When it was time to go, she didn’t complain. She came right along. I gather she was pretty young when you got her.”
“She still is. She couldn’t have been more than six or seven weeks old when I found her.”
“That is young. At least, now she has friends.”
“What if she takes off with the other wolves and doesn’t come back?” Shannon asked.
“She’s a wolf, sweetheart. If she decides to go and be with the other wolves, that is her choice. I hope she doesn’t leave us, but I won’t force her to stay.”
“Well, I’m going to make sure she has lots of yummy treats and she won’t want to leave.”
That made everyone laugh.
Shannon received a text message on her phone. When she read it, she giggled, then sent a reply.
Fletch looked at her.
“I’m sorry. It was from Michelle. She wanted to know if everything was alright,” she leaned over and whispered, “and if you had any sexy bear friends.”
“What did you tell her?”
“I told her ‘yes’,” She glanced at the three sexy men sitting around the lounge, then she whispered again, “she loves blondes.”
“What if they have mates?” he whispered back.
“Oh! I didn’t think about that.” She said out loud.
Craig, Royce and Dakota all looked at Shannon.
“Ignore her, she was having an epiphany.”
“What does that mean?” Royce asked.
“It means she just suddenly realized something.” Craig told him.
“Oh! What was it?”
“What was what?”
“Her epiphany.”
“I can’t tell you,” Shannon interrupted, “it’s a secret.”
“Oh. Are all epiphanies a secret?” Royce asked.
“Most of the time.” Fletch replied with a laugh.
“Fletch, I have to return to Caldwell and collect my things. I also have to get my car.”
“I can’t go with you right now; I have to get this place up and running. I don’t like the idea of you driving back all by yourself.”
“I can go with her,” Royce spoke up, “I mean if it’s okay. It wouldn’t take us very long with two people driving.”
“And when do you plan to catch up on training? How much helicopter experience do you have?”
“Lots. My cousin flew air rescue. Because I’m a certified EMT, I went along when they were shorthanded. I’ve actually received my Air Rescue certification already.”
“Really, I didn’t see that in your file.”
“I have a copy if you need it.”
“I’d appreciate it, thank you. I’ll check to find out why it wasn’t in your files.”
“Thank you, Captain. So, what about going with Shannon?”
“I'll have to think about it.”
“Be patient, Royce.” Shannon gave him a brilliant smile. Fletch suspected Royce and Dakota both had a crush on his mate.
“Fletch, I have to return that rental car, I need my car.”
As they talked, the door buzzer sounded. Craig went to see who it was.
“Gary needs one of those,” Shannon shuddered remembering her ex pounding on the door.
“Are you okay?” Fletch asked.
“Yes, I’m fine.”
Craig returned with Mr. Gavin
“Dr. Stevens, I brought you the Simmons property description and fact sheet. Are you still interested? If you are, the owners have authorized me to make you an offer.”
Shannon laughed.
“Aren’t I the one that is supposed to make an offer.”
“Yes, you are correct. Is there somewhere we can talk?”
“Let’s go to my office, Mr. Gavin. You are welcome to use my desk.”
Shannon, Fletch, and Mr. Gavin left the others to relax.
“Do you think she’ll buy the place?” Dakota spoke out.
“I hope so,” Royce added.
“You do know she is the Captain’s mate?” Craig looked at both of them.
“Of course we do, but we like her,” Dakota added. “It’s like having a sister.”
“Or a mom.” Royce didn’t elaborate.
*****
Shannon, Fletch, and Mr. Gavin sat around the desk in the office.
“The Simmons family want nothing to do with that property. Old man Simmons was a bitter, nasty man and they hated him. The first year he was married, his wife had a son. The old man wanted nothing to do with him after his wife died. He sent him off to boarding school as soon as he was old enough. The son never returned. After he graduated from college, he married and had four children. Old man Simmons refused to acknowledge his grandchildren, or so it seemed.”
“That is so sad,” Shannon commented.
“He must have had a change of heart because before he died, he left his grandchildren millions. The only stipulation of the will was they could never sell the house. They hired a lawyer to search for a loophole, making it possible for them to rid themselves of the house. The loophole is a ninety-nine-year lease for one dollar. With the ninety-nine-year lease, they can legally transfer ownership.”
“WHAT!!” Shannon couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
Fletch was sure that wasn’t the end of it.
“What else? It can’t be that simple.” Fletch ask.
“Oh, but it is. When Mr. Simmons purchased the land, he made it impossible for the land to ever be taken out from under him.”
“What if she doesn’t want to live there anymore?”
“The original contract is broken. The Simmons family is no longer tied to the legalities of the will. Dr. Shannon can do whatever she wants. She can lease it to someone else or let the state have it.”
“And this is all on paper.”
“I assure you, it’s completely legal.”
“Mr. Gavin, do you have a copy of this, I'd like someone to look it over.”
“I have a copy right here. Let me know what you decide. I really must be going.”
Shannon walked him out to his car.
“Thank you, Mr. Gavin, we’ll be in touch.”
Fletch walked up behind her and put his arms around her.
“It’s almost too good to be true.” Shannon remarked as she leaned against him.
“We’ll find out soon enough.”
Epilogue
Eagle Air Rescue in Montana officially opened for business one month after they moved in. Shannon leased the Simmons place and opened a family practice. She was worried at first that it was too far out of town and people wouldn’t come to her.
What she hadn’t realized was, shifters need doctors, too. Once the word went out, she had more than enough patients to keep her busy. At first, she was nervous, but it was the people that came to her, not their animals. Once in a while she might have to treat a shifted patient, but it didn’t happen very often.
Piccolo visited Shannon often, only because she could go into the forest and join her friends. She also guarded Shannon when Fletch couldn’t be there.
